sounds like a rod knock and no power to me. So now do I spend $1000-1500 and too many hours putting an engine in this toilet so I can sell it and pay her loan off, or just sell it as is and eat the difference. FML

What can you sell it for as-is? $1000-1200 maybe? That leaves a lot to write off. You’d likely be further ahead putting in a newer motor, if you have the time and space.

nada is somewhere around 5K in good condition, she owes $4500. That said there is still a laundry list and about $1000 in parts beyond the motor I need to and was planning on putting into it (plus time) to have it be something I would be comfortable selling at market value. I was hoping to dump the $1000 in it (or maybe $500 from a boneyard) and get her out of the payment.

yeah the best part of it is she was gifted the 04 4.0l with low miles, which I would have gladly given her mom 5K for. So in the long run the wash isn’t so bad. Kind of like shifting the payment around a little bit.

the car she was replacing it with is a 4.0, the very last year for it too - with 50K miles. I thought we were going to be okay and be able to sell this one. Now I really have to up my game and get the death wobble figured out on the 04

I appreciate it. I hate them too. IIRC the throttle body wont come off with the engine in place (from the back) and the engine wont come out with the throttle body on top of the plastic plenum. I appreciate the offer. I want to take you up on that but I will have buick things for you to help with

You could throw it in a back lot till you’ve got the time to fix it. At this point if you sell it this year or next year it won’t change the value much.

Dump the Jeep and replace it with something infinitely more classy and probably more reliable. Like this 1990 Peugeot 605 for probably half of what the Jeep costs to repair.

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

But seriously, look at the different possibilities:

1. Sell as is. Total costs + effort required?

2. Source new engine, buy new engine, install new engine, then sell. Total costs + effort required?

What’s the difference in total costs and required work? Say, scenario 1 costs you $500 more than scenario 2, yet requires 20 hours of your time. Is that worth it to you? I can imagine working 20 hours for $500 isn’t worth it but 10 hours for $5000 is. I have no clue how much those Jeeps are worth or how much time (and frustration) it takes you to do all this.

Take it to somewhere offering the $3k push-pull-tow trade option and lease a new CUV of your choice. Won’t take much to get something for < $300 / month.

If only shipping were cheaper, you could offload it to somewhere Eastern Bloc with low labor rates and possible access to “totally legitimate” affordable spares through the mob for repair and local sale. Then through fudging of paperwork, bring back a GAZ or a Niva and title it as the WK. Win-win.

I suck at financial stuff, but I see this as a wash:

1) Spend $1500 on an engine, plus the $1000 extra dollars to make it sellable. If you sell it and get $5k, you pay off the $4500, and put $500 in your pocket. But you sunk $2500 into it, so you’re really out $2000 but no more payment.

2) Sell as is for probably $1000-1500. Add in the $1000 you needed for the extra parts to make it sellable. You still owe $2500-2000 dollars to finish the loan.

So the way this comes across to me, you’re going to be out about $2000 either way to get rid of this thing. So I’d probably go route 2 and save myself the headache of trying to rebuild it.

I’d cut your losses and sell it as-is. Even if you spend the $1000-$1500 to put the engine in it may still be a gamble, and you’re going to “rock the boat” of anything else that’s close to breaking.

Yeah it seems like a lot of hassle to go the other way, and at the end of the day you’re still eating the same amount of money.

Though I caution you, I let my wife handle our finances, I just fork over the money. That’s because if it were up to me we’d eat Hungry Man dinners, live in a double wide with some weird pet, like a 400lb tortoise or something, at least 47 guns, several motorcycles that don’t work, and a bitchin’ Camaro parked out front.

What’s it worth in running condition vs as-is? If the difference is $2000 or greater, then do the repair.

Otherwise, dump it and move on.

The junkyard near me they run specials. Some weeks you could get an engine for $80, provided they had it. You also have to pull it yourself, but that’s what a battery operated reciprocating saw is for. There’s also no guarantee that engine would be good, but if you look for one that’s smashed up, there’s a good change it was running before it was brought in. So I’d get a junkyard engine and swap it in.

However, some people are throwing out 4 figures for an engine. That makes me lean more towards just selling it as-is as a mechanics special. You still might be able to get $1,000+ for it, at least that’s what I’ve seen some listed for that needed an engine.
